Kryten v2.1
~~~~~~~~~~~
By Robert Titman
© ARM'd & Dangerous, 1998
The Plot
~~~~~~~~
You are Kryten, a mechanoid aboard the mining ship Red Dwarf. All the crew
have been dead for over 3,000,000 years. Your only company is Dave Lister
the last surviving human, the ship's hologram Arnold J Rimmer, a being
evolved from felines named the Cat and a senile computer called Holly.
You have been deactivated for some reason. When your auto-reboot kicks in
you find yourself in an empty quarters. Your worry chip is on overload and
your anxiety circuits are burning out! You MUST find the rest of the crew,
the ironing will just have to wait...
The Game
~~~~~~~~
This is a text adventure game. Commands such as, GO NORTH or EXAMINE FISH
can be typed. The parser understands about 40 basic commands. For extra help
and a list of all commands plus sub-commands, type HELP during the game.
In version 1.5 there are also sub-commands which let you use a command with
a different word, for example TAKE is also GRAB and GET; EAT can also be
called SWALLOW. Version 2.0 introduces pronouns. If you EXAMINE LID and then
TAKE IT the game will understand you mean the lid and pick it up.
The function keys can be used for some commands, for example F8 is EXAMINE.
There are also one letter abbreviations so GO SOUTH may be typed as S,
EXAMINE is also X, LOOK is L and INVENTORY is I. You can SAVE and LOAD
Kryten games, so you can come back to a game later. The music may be toggled
on and off by typing SOUND.
The game contains 155 rooms and 84 objects. The locations range from Justice
World to a vat of dogs' milk. A variety of characters, from the original
series and 3,000,000 years before, also feature in the game.
Hints
~~~~~
* You know when you have done something useful because you will be given
points. Try to get the highest possible score.
* Make a map and write down any clues you are given, without a map the game
is much, much harder.
* Do not waste objects, it might get you points, but the object could be
vital later on.
* If you are doing anything risky save the game, then if you die or lose a
vital object you can reload.
* When you speak to characters is is always nice to say "Hello" and always
ask for "Help".
* If a character asks for something, give it to them. You could be greatly
rewarded.
* To get on in the game you will need to find the 'Souper' password.
Bibliography
~~~~~~~~~~~~
This game is based on the TV series 'Red Dwarf' (mostly on the first 3
series) and the books, 'Infinity welcomes careful drivers' and 'Better than
life' ('Last Human' and 'Backwards' were not published when this game was
first written). All of these are written by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor.
All characters, objects and (most) rooms are mentioned in or are in the above
sources.
This game is a tribute to Red Dwarf. Consider it a piece of fan fiction. I
do not claim copyright on any of the characters in this game.
